Messina, Mt. etna, taormina - Paul Baker, West End vocalist
Sicily, dominated by the still active Mt. Etna, was settled by Greeks, who established Taormina and Messina, among other cities.
A Greek theater was built in Taormina in the 3rd century BCE, and plays are still performed there today, due to its good acoustics.
During the Roman period, aqueducts and bridges were built, the Saracens built mosques and the Byzantines and Normans built churches. Sicily has also been ruled by the French, Spanish, and Germans, but since 1866, it has been Italian.
